Easter 2020 Programe

Join us at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford Click Here Apply for Course

We are offering a 2-week residential Easter camp for 12- to 18-year-olds based at Oxford University’s Lady Margaret Hall, where all participants will study, eat, and sleep for the duration of the course.

What will you do on the course?

The course is non subject-specific and is designed to build the transferable skills of students from all disciplines – critical thinking and analysis, creativity, communication, teamwork and problem solving.

We help students develop the kind of thought-through views and perspectives and nuanced communication skills, that they need to be able to demonstrate in order to thrive in interviews, schools, higher education, and the wider world. And, as we see students in holiday times, we also make sure they have a really good time!

Timetable

Sessions will take place in the morning in classes of up to 12 students over three-and-a-half hours (including two short breaks). Each day’s sessions are based around a specific theme, such as ‘identity’, ‘first impressions’, ‘sustainability, ‘migration’ or ‘artificial intelligence’, explored in interactive ways, through games, debates and discussion.

Afternoons are devoted to a wide range of activities from punting, tennis, croquet and orienteering to interview workshops and trips around the museums and landmarks of Oxford. The evening programme is fun, lively and varied; it includes a film night, debating challenge, a Q&A with Oxford University undergraduates, a games night and a celebratory ‘formal hall’ dinner at the end of the course.

What does the course price include?

  • Thirty hours of teaching by Oxbridge graduates in small classes of up to 12 students
  • Thirty further hours of workshops and activities
  • Accommodation in single rooms in Lady Margaret Hall
  • Three excellent meals a day
  • All evening entertainment
  • Exploratory trips in and around Oxford to museums and famous landmarks
  • Formal hall
  • One-to-one mock interview
  • End-of-course awards ceremony and graduation certificate

Where do students stay?

Students are housed in the rooms that Oxford University undergraduates at Lady Margaret Hall use during term time. Rooms are simple, clean and furnished with a bed, wardrobe, desk and chair. Rooms are cleaned every day, with bedding and towels changed every three days. Students will also have the opportunity to roam around the beautiful and extensive gardens of Lady Margaret Hall, which offer tennis courts, a sports pitch, a croquet lawn and table tennis table, and access to the Cherwell River for punting.

The course in a nutshell

In today’s Google-powered world, analysis and interpersonal skills replace facts and rote learning as the cornerstone of a modern education. ICON Easter course will give students a chance to relax and enjoy themselves while also developing the kind of invaluable critical thinking and communications skills that will set them apart in interview, and benefit them in any educational, social, career setting. Students will get a good deal of personal attention, and there will be opportunities to discuss, one-to-one, next steps in education or any individual academic concerns, as well as time and space for quiet study. The course also acts as an excellent two-week taster of life as a student in an Oxford University college.

Who runs this programme?

All teachers on the course are graduates from Oxford and/or Cambridge University. They are engaging, enthusiastic and dedicated, with at least two years’ teaching experience.
